Are You Playing the Blame Game?

by Mitzi Dulan, RD

When it comes to nutrition and fitness, it may seem easier to start blaming, complaining or justifying rather than to accept personal responsibility for your own choices.  “I don’t have time to work out” , “I don’t eat THAT much”, “I just had a baby (2 years ago)”. Sound familiar?  We all have busy schedules and sometimes a little thing called “life” steps in despite even our best intentions.  It’s time to step back and take 100% responsibility for your life.  Ultimately, the quality of your life is the result of the choices you have made until now. Blaming, complaining or justifying doesn’t get you anywhere. The good news is that you are also the one who can make the choices that will lead to a healthy, satisfying life! You have the ultimate control and one of the best ways to hold yourself accountable is through active goal setting.

Write it down and be specific.
You are more likely to follow through with a goal if you write it down.  Make your statement concrete and easy to remember.  It is better to say that you will exercise for 30 minutes four times a week instead of broadly stating that you want to work out more.  Be time-specific. If you want to lose weight, give yourself a deadline (ex. I will weigh 130 pounds by March 31, 2008)!

Review your goals twice a day.
Make time each day to review your goals. Visualize each goal as if it has already happened. Constant exposure will help you achieve it.

Decide what you are willing to sacrifice.
Maybe you will commit yourself to preparing nutritious meals at home rather than eating out or maybe you plan to forgo an extra hour of sleep so that you can wake up early to squeeze in a workout session, or eliminate one hour of daily time-wasting television. Whatever it may be, the benefits will gradually add up and be well worth it in achieving your goals!

Start your plan, now!
Go ahead, just do it.  Stop pushing things off until you get settled in your new house, find the perfect job, or the kids start school.  There will NEVER be a perfect time.  Set your goals now and start today! These basic techniques can easily be applied to improve every aspect of your life.  You control your own destiny, so start making things happen!
